Neytiri (after Rousseau)
Pairing:
The Dream by Henri Rousseau
Image of Neytiri from the Avatar film series
Acrylic on canvas
Dimensions: 34" x 28"
Artist's Insights:
Q. Is this an exception that proves the rule? You have two images that do not follow the "disconcerting juxtaposition" focus of your work?
A. I was enthralled with Neytiri when the movie Avatar came out in 2009. The sharp, pointed forms from ears, to headdresses to body paint were tantalizing as were the exotic colors and outlandish sea and air creatures . It was a surrealistic experience and I turned to the post-impressionistic jungle paintings of Henri Rousseau for more. Pairing his aptly titled "The Dream" with Neytiri served to extend the imagery of other-worldliness. The paint wasn't dry before one of my daughters scooped up the painting and brought it to her home where she continues to love it.
