Artist's Insights:
Q. What can you say about choosing an oil burner to accompany a very colorful "Woman in Blue" by Matisse?
A. Well, the oil burner is colorful, too. In fact, it was brand new and recently installed in our basement. At the time, many critics had referred to my work as depicting "disconcerting juxtapositions". So, why not? Also, at the time, I had a basement studio, so the red boiler was not far from view every day.
We don't think of oil boilers as bright. Maybe this is why the model Lydia Delectorskaya's wide blue dress with bright white fringe, a the large yellow-orange crown of mimosas fanning her face and the sumptuous red chair with yellow-orange accents was a good match for the humble but colorful furnace. I also liked that the elements were limited to the primary colors.
Original for sale. Print options available.
