Artist's Insights:
Q. What attracted you to an image of a grocery store?
A. I had been taking slides of various storefronts in Torrington CT, near my hometown. I had been looking at Richard Estes' paintings of storefronts with reflections in the windows. This image of Tommy's was very charming, I thought, because of the torn awning. I must have taken the picture after-hours because the store was closed and the boxes out front were empty. (Check out those early 1970's prices!) I liked the image so much that I painted it alone without a pairing as I had done in my earlier work. I submitted that painting to the Silvermine Art of the Northeast Exhibition in 1976 and it sold.
My attraction to the image was so strong that I actually went back to it as a background for the Vermeer painting. I liked the way the artist was sitting in the street, so to speak, but a decision had to be made about the chandelier. I finally got it to work. This painting is a favorite of many and received several awards.
