Barber Pole (after Sargent and Cottingham)
Pairing:
Madame X by John Singer Sargent
Barber Shop by Robert Cottingham
Acrylic on canvas
Dimensions: 12" x 10"
Artist's Insights:
Q. In this painting, from the Fragments Gallery, both pairings are works of art, as is the case with many of your major works.
A. I like when this happens. When I started doing side-by-side 12" x 10" fragments, I was on the look-out for narrow vertical images. Friends offered suggestions and, believe-it-or-not, some listed barber poles. In this painting, I was lucky enough to find a special barber pole, an actual work of art by Robert Cottingham. I had used Sargent's "Madame X" before but this time I concentrated only on her face. The up-close view reveals subtleties in the skin tone and the hair which did not appear in the earlier full-figure painting. One of my challenges was the potential tension point between the tip of her nose and the pole. After many tries, I found just the right distance.
