Artist's Insights:
This diner has a history. Located in Torrington, CT, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places At the time I decided to paint it, a project to renovate, relocate and reopen it was underway. I had a few happy surprises while painting. When I added a dividing line in the street, I noticed that it picked up on the handkerchief in Jean Cocteau's pocket. Also it was easy to place the figure in the center and have the entrance frame him and the name of the diner spread out on either side of him in words of identical length.
