Tunnel (after Modigliani)
Pairing:
Paul Guillaume by Amedeo Modigliani
Image of the entrance to the Holland Tunnel
Acrylic on canvas
Dimensions: 28" x 36"
Artist's Insights:
It is at this point in my Modigliani journey, that I fully realized a Modigliani portrait was a good choice if I had a background composed mainly of horizontal and vertical lines. This is because most of his subjects lean to the side thus creating an interesting series of diagonal lines superimposed on a checkerboard pattern. The same is true of the four paintings with NYC backgrounds: Radio City, the entrance to the Holland Tunnel, Broadway, and a subway car. It's as if my Modigliani approach became a template that I could use with any number of his subjects.
Original for sale.
