Abduction (after Rubens)
Pairing:
The Rape of the Daughters of Leucippus by Peter Paul Rubens
Image of a green vintage automobile
Acrylic on canvas
Dimensions: 35" x 47"
Artist's Insights:
Q. A close look at the painting reveals that the Rubens painting has been flipped so that a second image is a mirror image the first. Do you recall why you chose to do this?
A. I don't remember when the inspiration hit me but I'm assuming it had to do with the need to fill the space along the length and rear of the car. This was at a time when I delighted in detail and the Baroque period provided plenty of that. Because of the mirror image, there's a happy accident in the center as the female figure in the foreground seems to reach over and touch her own hand. There's also a doubling of the gray horses which encircle the outstretched hands along with a portion of the sky creating an interesting shape at the every center of the painting. I also like the touches of red in three key parts of the composition.
