Carousel (after Degas)
Pairing:
The Absinthe Drinker by Edgar Degas
Photo of a carousel taken by S. Sbarbaro
Acrylic on canvas
Dimensions: 42" x 47"
Artist's Insights:
Q. What brought these two images together?
A. The original Degas is six feet talI and made quite an impression in 1872. I felt it was important for me to include it in my repertoire. It took me a while to find the background. I was looking for carousels and finally a friend who had just been to Disneyworld brought me a picture she had taken.
I have always viewed this painting as a mood piece. Looking at the absinthe drinker makes me sad but the sadness disappears when I look up at the prancing horse. I painted the young woman's companion for balance mostly but it contributes, with the young woman, to displaying the extremes of emotions: laughter is so close to tears.
