Standing Girl (after Sargent and Leger)
Pairing:
Daughters of Edward Darley Boit (Mary Louisa) by John Singer Sargent
The City Painting from Fernand Leger original work (exhibition poster)
Acrylic on canvas
Dimensions: 41" x 20"
Artist's Insights:
Q. I'm just wondering if you called this painting Standing Girl because in the original Sargent, there is also a sitting girl.
That's probably what happened. Giving a title to my paintings is the least of my concerns and it is often done in haste. This girl, one of the daughters of Edward Darley Boit, stands alone in the Sargent painting, off to the side. The light from the hidden window does not serve to illuminate the dark, interior space. It does, however, shine on the girl's bright white pinafore. The background picks up on the white and puts her in a more lively space.
