Remotes (after Picasso)
Pairing:
Portrait of Jacqueline Roque with Her Hands Crossed by Pablo Picasso
Image of two TV remote control devices
Acrylic on canvas
Dimensions: 34" x 28"
Artist's Insights:
Q. You seem to have started to feature contemporary images of technology in your work. Obviously, this accentuates the anachronism that exists in pairings with old masters and also with new masters, Picasso, for example.
A. I have always liked Picasso's painting of Jacqueline and planned to find a suitable background. Maybe it's the remoteness of her glance that made me pick up my TV remote and project it behind her. Surely, I'm kidding, but one never knows what goes on in the subconscious!
Right away, I knew I did not want to widen the remote so I decided to repeat it. Happy accidents resulted from that decision. It's as if Jacqueline's arms hold together the two vertical shapes behind her. The painting takes on a stong vertical direction especially with her elongated neck. Geometric shapes abound among the three images, all within the primary color family.
Original for sale. Print options available.
