Morrison Hardware (after Velazquez)
Pairing:
The Surrender of Breda by Diego Velazquez
Photo of Morrison Hardware storefront, Torrington CT
Acrylic on canvas
Dimensions: 37" x 48"
Artist's Insights:
Q. What was going on at Morrison's? Did you take the photo or did you find the image?
A. I took the photo. The background of the painting dates back to 1976 and the celebration of the US bi-centennial. At the time, many establishments throughout the country were decked out in red, white and blue colors. Morrison's, no longer in business sad to say, was located in Torrington CT.
In the foreground, "The Surrender of Breda" depicts a military victory of the Spanish over the Dutch. Obviously, there's a mismatch between the two pairings with respect to time and location but my goal was to fit the two images together. Note that the vertical red, white, and blue banners are placed off center but are balanced by the large number of lances held by the victorious Spanish. The white door with glass panels highlights the central act of surender. I think it works.
