Queen (after Gheeraerts)
Pairing:
Portrait of Queen Elizabeth I by Marcus Gheeraerts
Image of an aerial view of Miami Beach, Florida
Acrylic on canvas
Dimensions: 42" x 49"
Artist's Insights:
Q. This painting is notable for its intricate detail , both in the foreground and in the background. Can you provide information on your choice of background?
A. One day while watching an ice skating performance on television, I heard a commentator say that the skater was also a painter. When the performance was over, we were shown one of his works. It was a copy of Gheeraert's Elizabeth I done in a painterly, swirling style. That's when I decided that it would be fun to do the same work in my own style. But I was stuck for a background. I was having no inspiration until, while celebrating our 10-year anniversary in Miami Beach, Florida, I purchased a postcard of an aerial view of the city. I said to my wife, "Here's the background for the Queen," I was ready to go home right then and there! At the risk of stating the obvious, the combination of all the circles and bows in the dress and all the squares and rectangles in the cityscape make for a very satisfying interplay.
