Tree (after Duchamp and Kaemmer)
Pairing:
Portrait in the style of Marcel Duchamp by Gary Kaemmer
Photo of a tree with a yellow ribbon
Acrylic on canvas
Dimensions: 12" x 10"
Artist's Insights:
Q. What do you mean by "in the style of Duchamp?"
A. The portrait in the first pairing is actually of Marcel Duchamp painted by an artist named Gary Kaemmer. Kaemmer executed it in the style of Duchamp's "Nude Descending the Staircase". Duchamp's approach was a startling innovation for his time and seeing the same approach repeated, in what can only be an homage to the master, was also startling for me.
Q. To use a Marcel Duchamp term, it seems the tree was "ready-made" for this pairing.
A. Yes, it was a no-brainer to find a vertical image with the same tactile woody-ness quality. The tree I chose was in a local park. I liked the interplay of light and dark. The light, from the bright sun, visible in the background, is in contrast with the dark shadows and the dark tree. Not only are the two pairings connected by their tactile surfaces but also by the yellow ribbon around the tree and the yellow color of the Duchamp portrait.
