VW (after Manet)
Pairing:
A Bar at the Folies-Bergere by Edouard Manet
Image of a Volkswagen Beetle automobile
Acrylic on canvas
Dimensions: 24" x 30"
Artist's Insights:
Q. Except for the hint of blue in the background, this painting, done in blacks and grays, doesn't seem to need any more color. The two pairings are a perfect fit.
A. Oh, but wait a minute. I was an early VW bug owner and I remember turn signal bars that flipped out from the door frames behind each door. This particular model has exterior flashing turn signals mounted low on the front fenders. They are yellow-orange and I was delighted to paint them.
Suzon, the barmaid at the Folies-Bergère, who is also portrayed in my Bantam Bread painting, does seem to fit this space very well. The shading on the VW's hood is similar to the shading on her face and on her hair. Also, her straight-ahead gaze is quite appropriate in her new role as car driver.
